Town of Santa Ana del Pedregal

Near Cotopaxi, on the outskirts of the Hacienda, we have the indigenous community of El Pedregal, a small town that has maintained its culture of the “chagra” (peasant). The chagra wears the traditional wool poncho and hat, they eat mote (hominy), chochos (lupino beans), potatoes, lima beans, quinoa, grain fed poultry, beef, lamb and pork.

Their leisure time is spent in rodeos where the “chagras” get together to drive herds of cattle and horses grazing on the mountains. Every so often they have contests where they play with ribbons, they fight small bulls and both men and women play football (soccer).
